Black Alumni Association Funding Priorities
The Black Alumni Association recognizes a strong desire from our alumni to support and fund causes and priorities that directly give back to the Black community at Drake University. Below are three giving opportunities that further affirm Drake's strong commitment to fostering a culture that is welcoming and celebrates our strength through our diversity.
Crew Scholars Program
The Crew Scholars program is an academic excellence and leadership development program for incoming students with a passion for diversity. The Crew Scholars Program offers a community in which students build lifelong friendships, attend exciting events, and get involved in every aspect of campus life, all while cultivating academic excellence and leadership skills and nurturing their passion for making a difference.
John Dee Bright College
John Dee Bright College provides affordable access to Drake excellence to ambitious, creative, high-achieving learners who want to do college differently. Through high-impact interdisciplinary, collaborative learning as part of a close-knit cohort of peers, Bright College students prepare themselves for ongoing educational attachment and career success.
Black Cultural Center
Since 1969, the Black Cultural Center at Drake University has been deeply rooted in tradition and Blackness, proving to be a valuable resource to students who identify as Black, African, African American, Pan-Carribbean, and Multi-racial, on the Drake University campus. It was developed as a result of an expressed need by Black students at Drake. Today, 5%, or 150, of the current undergraduate student population identify as Black. The BCC has given students a place to study, watch movies, have dinner with friends, host organization meetings, cultural events and panel discussions, and just hang out - a sense of belonging and home away from home. Students are able to see themselves reflected in spaces such as the BCC; ultimately, helping them lead change, persist, and be successful during their time at Drake.
