Jay N. Darling Institute

In 2026, Drake University, home of The Jay N. Darling Institute, will proudly celebrate the 150th birthday of Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling. Drake is proud to be a steward of Darling’s legacy and his sustaining impact on our world. As a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist, creator of the Federal Duck Stamp Program, founder of the Cooperative Research Unit Programs & National Wildlife Federation, and originator of 28 National Wildlife Refuges during his tenure as the chief of the US Biological Survey, and the famous Lake Darling in Brighton, Iowa bears his name and legacy as does the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, Florida.; Darling’s scope and impact are unmatched.

Darling’s 150th birthday, not only honors his profound contributions to wildlife preservation, environmental advocacy, artistry, and humor; but also serves as a heartfelt invitation for those who share his values to make an investment to further advance his vision and legacy. In honor of this milestone, Drake University is launching an effort to raise $150,000 supporting the Jay N. Darling Institute at Drake University. Through your contribution, we can further his mission of fostering environmental stewardship and education, ensuring that his vision for a sustainable future thrives for generations.

Together, let us begin to look forward and celebrate this remarkable 150th anniversary with purpose and passion, honoring a legacy that inspires us all to take action for the world we cherish. Thank you for your consideration of a gift honoring Darling’s legacy and supporting the programs that reflect his vision and values.
