Frequently Asked Questions

Will the 2020 Beautiful Bulldog Contest be held?

We intend for this event to occur in tandem with the rescheduled Drake Relays. Should the public health situation make it unsafe to host this event in person, the contest will take place in a virtual format to choose the 2020 Most Beautiful Bulldog.

Will the official 2020 Beautiful Bulldog contestants still be drawn in a lottery?

Yes, on Thursday, March 26, contest officials will draw 39 contestants and 10 alternates. The 40th contestant will be chosen by public voting. One significant change is that the lottery will not be a public event, but will take place as a live-streamed event on the Beautiful Bulldog Contest Facebook page. Please RSVP to the Facebook event for the lottery to receive timely updates.

How can I stay up-to-date on the Beautiful Bulldog Contest?

Please follow the Beautiful Bulldog Contest Facebook page and bookmark our webpage, www.drake.edu/beautifulbulldog. You can also RSVP to both events where we will post timely updates.

General Questions

Do I need to be present at the lottery to become an official contestant?

No, you do not need to be present to become an official contestant. We will live stream the public lottery on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ beautifulbulldog. Last year, the runner-up was from Seattle, Washington, and we get contestants from all over the country each year—as long as you can commit to attending the contest if you’re selected, we encourage you to apply!

Is it too late to enter my Bulldog?

Registration for the 2020 contest is open from February 14, 2020 through March 13, 2020. Then, we will hold a public lottery to choose the 40 official contestants. No registrations will be accepted after March 13. Be sure to bookmark www.drake.edu/beautifulbulldog and follow our Facebook page www.facebook.com/beautifulbulldog so you don’t miss any announcements regarding the contest.

Does it cost to enter?

No, it does not cost to register for the Beautiful Bulldog Contest. We ask that only serious applicants register so we can avoid last minute drops. We draw alternates, but have had an increase in participants dropping out last minute. Please only register if you can attend the contest on Sunday, April 19, 2020 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Do I need to bring proof of vaccines?

All entries must have current rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and bordatella (kennel cough) vaccinations and this year we will be asking for proof of vaccinations from your veterinarian should you be drawn as one of the 40 official contestants.

Can I bring my pet as a spectator to the contest?

No. For the safety of the animals and all spectators, we ask that people do not bring their pets to the contest. The only animals allowed are the contestants and the animals up for adoption from the various local animal shelters.

If we win, what is expected of us?

As the official mascot of the 2020 Drake Relays, this year’s Most Beautiful Bulldog is required to visit the Drake Relays on Saturday, April 25, 2020. The winner will also be asked to attend the 2021 Beautiful Bulldog Contest, if possible, for a formal passing of the cape and crown. The winner may be invited to participate in additional promotional opportunities throughout the year, but it is ultimately up to each individual winner to decide how involved they want to be.
