Downtown Street Painting 2014


Street painting on the Drake campus has long served as the unofficial kickoff to festivities surrounding the Drake Relays. To celebrate and expand upon this tradition, Drake is partnering yet again with the city of Des Moines and Court Avenue District to bring this festive event to the downtown area.

Downtown Street Painting allows business, nonprofit and community organizations to celebrate the Drake Relays and participate in this historic tradition. 

Wednesday, April 23 | 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Court Avenue, between 3rd and 4th streets
Registration starts at 12:30 p.m.
Awards ceremony starts at 4:30 p.m.
Court Avenue Happy Hour after awards at 5 p.m.

Paint the street

Participation in the Downtown Street Painting event allows you to promote your organization and share your connections with Drake and Des Moines. Your square will remain painted and will be viewed by the thousands who enjoy the activities that take place on Court Avenue throughout the year. Contestants, you can receive a 40% discount up until April 14 if you shop at Sherwin Williams! You can pick up your supplies at the Alumni House on Thursday, April 17.

Business Rate: $250
Nonprofit/Community Organization Rate: $150

Happy Hour

After the awards, join us for Happy Hour on Court Avenue. Check out the specials put on by area bars and restaurants during Happy Hour. 

Fong's Pizza  Until 6 p.m.  1 free slice of pizza with purchase of a drink, $.50 off bottles, well drinks, and tiki's
Royal Mile  Until 6 p.m.  1/2 priced appetizers, $1 off well drinks and bottles
The Standard  
 4-7 p.m.  $5 martinis, $3 beers, $5 tapas
Dos Rios  4-7 p.m.  $5 margaritas, infused drinks and sangria, various appetizer specials
Court Avenue Brewing Company  4-6 p.m.  $1 off beers, well drinks and wines, 1/2 priced appetizers
 Johnny's Hall of Fame  3-7 p.m.  $2.50 domestic bottles and well drinks, $7.50 domestic pitchers
